NOW I KNOW I loved reading your book and now I know that only I control my future, not my grades or a teacher's lecture or the situation I may be in. Madison S. December 2010
HIGH SCHOOL'S OVER I appreciate you for helping me prove my high school teachers wrong. Thank you for telling me over and over that I can accomplish college and for providing the skills I used to do so. Samantha Dins
SURVIVED THE KILLER COURSE I appreciate your showing me better study techniques--most importantly how to change my mind to be positive and think on track! I would not have passed BIOL 1610 with you and your ideas! Erica E.
FROM INNER CITY TO PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS As a kid growing up in the inner city, education was never a top priority. In fact, I earned more respect because I was the fastest runner. As I moved along in grade school, I began to realize that my ability to play sports was provided me with opportunities not afforded other students.
In November 1999, I was finishing up my senior year of varsity football and reality hit—-I could not demonstrate math proficiency. Due to my athletics, I was placed in a class to prep me for “the test”. I passed the test, graduated and earned an athletic scholarship to college.
In college my values of learning/education had not changed, until I took a course offered by Professor Wilks. Her course taught me that I have the opportunity to be more than an athlete and that developing a commitment to learning can take me further in life than I was able to even imagine at the time. After numerous injuries, I realized, ALL I HAVE LEFT IS MY BRAIN; therefore, I committed myself to using the skills which Jill's book suggests, and I graduated in four years.
With that degree I work in the field of my dreams. Currently employed with Clark County Department of Family Services, I work with children and families to restore their homes. Since graduating in 2004, I have continued to pursue learning. I am currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Public Administration. Steve Price, IV, Department of Family Services, Las Vegas, NV
THE REAL WORLD I appreciate you for opening my eyes to the real world and making me a better student and person.
ONE STEP AT A TIME Just sitting here working on a mechanical certificate and thought of you, wondering how you are, reflecting on all the encouragement you gave me. I wanted to let you know that I continued schooling and received my Associates of Science. Then I moved to St. George where I have earned a Certificate in Civil Engineering, and I am currently earning a Certificate in Mechanical Engineering. You are still felt in my every day studies. Thanks for helping me learn how I learn. I miss seeing your smiling face and trying to walk fast enough to keep up with you. Leland Gentry, St. George, UT
HELPED MY EVERDAY LIFE I wanted to say thank you for teaching University Seminar. I can honestly say it was more than worth the time. I appreciate your sharing vast knowledge about everything from dendrites to ADD. The class helped me a lot in my everyday life. During the course while we were studying the ways of the brain, I was taking the Property/Casualty Insurance exam, one of the hardest tests I've ever taken. A 70% is passing. Before using your advice on wanting to study, I got a 63%, less than satisfactory. But when I used your technique, I improved from a 63 to a 78! Everyone was very impressed, and I owe a big chunk of that to you. All the best, Weston
EXPANDING MY DENDRITES I appreciate your helping me learn about myself and expanding my dendrites! You really helped me want to be better. Mary-Cate Greene, SUU
FROM DEAD END TO OPEN RANGE I met Jill and her “different” ideas in the summer of 2003. I had just divorced and knew that my job was nothing more than a dead end. I decided to go to school and took a class from Jill that explained new habits and ways of thinking and the time and focus that both demand. I also learned that to succeed in life or school I had to work hard and make myself believe that I can do anything I put my mind to.
Your Expanding Intelligence showed me that I control how my life is run. It is not controlled by fate or by the world itself. I used to think that I was dealt a hand like in a card game and I had to play that hand and that it was the only one that I got. Jill's tools and ideas taught me that I control how and what I use to make my decisions. I was able to turn my life around in little ways every day. I learned that learning is life long and everywhere, not just in school. M. Prisbrey, B. S. Range Management, Utah State University
FROM C's TO A's When I received my spring schedule the class I least worried about was Biology 1610 because I have always been exceptionally good at biology. In preparation for my first exam I diligently read all of the relevant material and felt like I was going to do extremely well. Much to my surprise, I received 78%. I felt extremely discouraged and destined to be a C+ student.
Then during one of her class sessions, Jill asked us to open our minds. She told us that if we put forth the effort we would be successful. Probably my biggest 'ah-ha' was realizing that I have an overly active inner voice cramping my studying. I merely learned how to direct it. Then Jill mentioned the test analysis to improve during exams. I jumped at the offer, went over my BIOL exam and earned a 90% on my next exam! A 90%!! I know that without Expanding Intelligence, school would be extremely difficult and stressful. My study sessions are 100 times more effective, which means I can spend more time doing things I enjoy with my family and less time stressing out about school. WOO-HOO! H. Shumway, Central, UT
